Wambaw Creek Wilderness Area

In Upper Charleston County we'll show you where the wild things are. About 45 minutes to an hour up the coast, it's well worth the drive to see 1,000 year old cypress trees in a beautiful, shaded and cool protected wilderness area. Located in the Francis Marion National Forest, we paddle through a sub-tropical forest to see elusive and shy alligators and neo-tropical migrating songbirds like Prothonotary Warblers. Truly, a nature-lover's paradise. While you're there, enjoy local restaurants, artisan gift shops, and seafood fresh off the boats in the historic Village of McClellanville. We run these trips at 10 am and 2 pm every day! Give us a call at 843-568-3222 or book online here. To see an overview of what to expect on a blackwater tour, check out this quick two minute video.

Reviews From Our Customers:

Robert Burkholder, Penn State University

I have been working with Nature Adventures Outfitters for the last thirteen years. In 2004 I was looking for a Charleston area outfitter who could give the students in a class I wanted to teach about Lowcountry culture and nature a sense of the variety of Lowcountry landscapes and Nature Adventures Outfitters was the only Charleston area outfitter then or now that could do that. They arranged a week-long program for my students that enabled them to experience tidal swamps and rivers, salt marshes and bays, and barrier islands, and they also served as a link to local caterers and historical sites and museums. Because of Nature Adventures Outfitters, I have been able to give hundreds of Penn State University students who have taken my class over the last thirteen years a comprehensive immersion experience that may not make them locals, but surely helps them to understand what being local to Awendaw or McClellanville or the isle of palms feels like. I don't think there is another outfitter in the area that could do that. My class works, I think, because I was lucky enough to find and hire Nature Adventures Outfitters when they were small company trying to find their way. As they have grown bigger, they have consistently given me the same quality personal service that I got the first time I worked with them.
I have returned to Nature Adventures Outfitters year after year for so long because of that personal service and because I have, from the start, been impressed with the quality of the equipment--lots of really nice wilderness Systems products--and the experience they provide, experience of both Kayaking and local natural and cultural history. The guides are knowledgeable, many of them master naturalists or biologists; there are guides who can interpret the marshes and maritime forests or the rice culture, and just about everything in between, and all of them I have worked with have become friends of mine and my students. I count myself lucky that I found Nature Adventures Outfitters all those years ago, but I count myself smart to have continued to work with them since then.

From the first phone call to arrival and check in everything was good. This was our first time Kayaking and had our 11 & 12 year olds with us too. We had two Tandem Kayaks which was perfect. Our Guide Ben was great. He was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. The kids learned a lot about the area and the ecosystem. We saw several dolphins and two did a somersault right in front of my daughter. We have seen many Dolphins but this was the closest experience and she loved it! Ben was great with keeping our pace at a level we could handle. The trip out into the harbor to see the birds was a little rough but manageable. This Tour was a little cheaper than the "other" big company advertised but I did not feel like I was getting anything less than a great experience. The equipment was good, and we had no parking issues. I would highly recommend this company.

Nature Adventure Outfitters are amazing. As I understand it, different guides have different knowledge base, so your experience may vary. Dianne, a Wildlife Biologist, was our Guide. She was extremely knowledgeable about local flora and fauna, culture, and even places to eat! She was very friendly and her passion for wildlife made our three hour Tour fly by. We saw dolphins on three occasions, baby Pelicans, a variety of birds, hermit crabs, spitting oysters, and got a rare biology lesson of a female blue crab. Dianne also did a great job finding us personalized kayaks based on our relative experience and size. 5 out of 5 star experience by far!

My sister and I wanted to have a local experience and Tour of the area from the water. Matt was a great Tour Guide. His background in Marine Biology and knowledge of the local Eco systems was evident every step of the way. The Tour exceeded our expectations every step of the way. We saw Dolphins, many species of birds, fish, Shrimp and crab.  I had no kayak experience and boarded with apprehension that I would not be able to keep up but in actuality it was so peaceful and a slow easy ride at my pace. I was able to snap a bunch of photos and the memories will last a lifetime. Can't wait to bring my hubby and kids next time. Thanks Matt for a great time!
