Naturalist Adventure Day Camp
Ages 6 - 12
At the Shem Creek Location

This Camp will take day trips in our own “Adventure Shuttle bus” to explore Blackwater Swamps, Barrier Islands, Nature Centers and will enlighten your child about endangered species while exploring the outdoors on easy, fun adventures!

Activities include: Kayaking, Canoeing, Hiking, Paddleboarding, Island Exploration, Swimming, Touch Tanks, Red Wolves, Raptors, and many other live animals! Taught by University Degreed & Master Naturalist Guides and Interns as well as Certified Camp Counselors First Aid/CPR and ACA Kayaking Course Accredited

Weeks of June 4-8th, June 18th-22nd, July 9th-13th, and July 23rd-27th,


Day 1- “Island Exploration Day” -We’ll spend the day on beautiful Capers Island State Heritage Preserve in search of dolphins, eastern shorebirds and more! We’ll board our very own privately chartered ferry boat with Barrier Island Eco-tours and discover critters that live in the bay with collection traps! Then we’ll explore the islands beach ecology, swim in the shallow waters (with life vests) and picnic on the beach!

Day 2- “Swamp Stomp Day” in Francis Beidler Forest Audubon Swamp Sanctuary – We’ll board the bus and head off to a fun filled day and journey on a boardwalk through an incredible 1,100 acres of Old Growth Cypress Tupelo Swamp. Here we’ll see and touch 1,000 year old Cypress trees and search for alligators, owls and turtles along the way! We’ll also discover the Nature Center where they can touch and see exhibits including turtles, snakes and the animals that live in the swamp!

Day 3- ““National Forest & Red Wolf Day” - Canoeing in Wambaw Swamp Wilderness Area & Sewee Red Wolf and Environmental Education Center– Campers will Paddle a beautiful blackwater creek through a protected wilderness area in the Francis Marion National Forest. On our paddle we’re sure to see small alligators, turtles and lots of neo-tropical song birds! Then it’s off to Sewee Visitors center to see the Red Wolves and visit the Nature Exhibit Hall! Includes live touch tank with marine creatures, live alligator and turtles.

Day 4 –“Native American and Raptor Day” - Center for Birds of Prey & Native American Indian Ruins – Campers will visit the incredible Avian Conservation Center in Awendaw at the Center for Birds of Prey. Here we’ll see Native Raptors as well as African Eagles, hawks and many others. We’ll even experience a flight demonstration too!We’ll also hike to the Sewee Indian Ruins and see a 4,000 year old ceremonial shell ring and view and touch Indian artifacts and search for Raptors in the sky! “

Day 5 – “Marsh & Dolphin Sea Kayaking and Paddleboarding Day” Explore the gentle saltwater marshes of Shem Creek Shrimping Village. See Dolphin, Pelicans and thousands of eastern Shore birds. Kids will collect and identify shells, find sharks teeth and have a great opportunity to see and learn about dolphin, manatee and other animals important to our marsh ecosystems. Led by Certified ACA Kayak Instructors, Master Naturalist and Coastal Kayak Guides.

June 11th-15th, June 25th-29th, July 16th-20th and July 30th-August 3rd, 2012

Day 2- “Cypress Gardens Discovery Day” in Berkeley county. – We’ll hike the garden trails, see the reptile exhibit house and then paddle through the swamp by row boat! Along the way we’ll search for alligators, owls and turtles, go dip netting for swamp creatures, discovering natural wonders in a flooded forest!

Day 3- Edisto Island Serpentarium Day! Off we go to the Serpentarium to see exotic and native reptiles from everywhere! Turtles, snakes, and lizards oh my! Afterwards, we’ll go to Edisto Beach and enjoy lunch beachside by the ocean.

Teen Wilderness Adventure Camp
Ages 13-16
June 17 - 22, 2012 and
July 15 - 20, 2012
$495 per camper

This is a “Real Expedition Camp” that travels campsite to campsite. We encompass 5 to 11 miles per day, based on the group, in the wilderness to remote areas of the Francis Marion National Forest, The Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and the Santee Coastal Reserve in Awendaw and McClellanville, SC. We’ll spend 6 nights, 5 full days and 3 ½ days exploring Pristine Wilderness Areas and National Lands encompassing longleaf pine forests, maritime sea island forests, barrier islands, marshes, swamps and different ecosystems along the way.

During the expedition they will develop a stewardship with the environment and will learn ethics, conservation and ecology, giving them a new appreciation for the great outdoors. The camp promotes self assurance, self esteem, independence, teamwork and self reliance skills that will help them deal with the challenges of their lives to come. Teens will come away with incredible experiences and friendships that will last a life time. Certifications in kayaking and outdoor skills will be awarded upon completion. These will be helpful if your teen seeks a career or summer job in this area.

This camp is led by University Degreed Naturalist Guides and Experienced Naturalists with backgrounds in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources and other Sciences. They have taught outdoor skills for years and have international expedition experience and backgrounds with NOLS, the ACA and Certified Wilderness courses. All are Certified in kayaking by the ACA and hold their First Aid CPR certifications and our leader of course holds his Wilderness First Reponder certification. We simply have the best staff you could ask for and they’ve been with us for years.

Nature Adventures was established in 1999. We are a permitted National Forest Service Outfitter and are fully licensed, insured and accredited. Certified ACA Coastal and River Kayak Instructors and dedicated Naturalist bring to the camp over 25 years experience. We are the company that environmental groups and Universities choose for their outdoor expeditions in our area.

Camp Fees: We try to keep our fees at a minimum so that teens from all walks of life can experience this incredible expedition. We realize we could charge a lot more, but we are committed to environmental education and to giving back to the earth. We believe that teens will live what they learn and will take with them an appreciation for the outdoors given this opportunity and will protect it in their futures.

On average, our expeditions cost $495 per camper per week. This includes 5 nights, 4 full days and 2 ½ days of activities plus food and provisions. Mountain Bikes, Tents and sleeping bags available for an additional nominal fee.
